So in the midst of the first week of school the sugar challenge expired. I'm proud to say I made it 2 whole weeks without sugary sweets. Thus, I celebrated with a frozen coffee drink from my favorite local coffee shop. Thanks to everyone who participated in the challenge with me!

As many of you know, I love writing poetry and expressing my thoughts through written word. After all, I am Poet L. I had the opportunity recently to write a spoken word for my church. This was only the second spoken word poem I had attempted to write. The topic: temptation. The topic hit close to home, for who among us doesn't struggle with temptation of some sorts! I usually just write poetry about what inspires me, and it generally comes to me very quickly. This poem however, was different. I struggled to gain inspiration.

So I started looking up Bible verses about temptation, and God slowly began giving me words and phrases. The final line of the poem was actually the first phrase that came to me. "When temptation draws it's line in the sand, take up My sword, and make a stand!" I knew right then I wanted this to be the last line of the poem. It reminded me of the Davy Crockett movie, when they are in the Alamo, and they realize no help is coming. LtCol William Travis takes his sword and draws a line in the sand. He says if you wish to fight cross the line, if you wish to leave the Alamo stay where you are. The story goes that every man crosses over the line, choosing to fight rather then surrender or escape. That's exactly how we have to handle temptation. The devil draws a line in the sand and if we remain where we are that is like surrendering, giving into sin. But if we cross over the line, that is us choosing to fight. We have to move from our current location and flee temptation, make a fighting stand. The great thing about it is that unlike the men in the Alamo, we can have victory by the power of God.

Here is the video that my wonderful church media team created! They did an awesome job!!

Make a Stand

Below is the written part:

Who is Satan
The father of lies (John 8:44)
Who tries
To advertise and glamorize

Men lusting after images in a magazine,
How obscene!
Women reading such lewd fantasies like 50 Shades of Gray
I pray, We throw this destructive material away!

Girls wearing immodest clothes which allow our brothers a peek
At something God designed to be mystique
Boys staring at a screen for satisfaction
Replacing love with pornographic action

Maybe you are tempted to
Have a bad attitude
Be a glutton of food
Drink until loved ones you exclude
Use words that are hurtful and crude
Follow the Hollywood notion that has misconstrued
Our family values, God’s name, leaving them devalued

Tempted to complain
Fill those around you with negative refrains
Tempted to overuse and abuse
Light someone up because you have a short fuse

The devil knows how to tempt each of us
Knows my unique kryptonite
And though I try with all my might
I fail time and again to do what I know is right (Mt 26:41)

Satan stands as my accuser
He calls me a loser
Sin over takes me like a cancer
It is everywhere, for I’ve let it sit and fester

Drowning in temptations seas
(God) pulls me up, says “don’t let sin seize
For I conquered it nailed to a tree
And my child, with you I am well pleased

Now rise I can help you flee from sin and youthful lust, (2 Tim 2:22)
Leave the devil in your dust
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to man (1 Cor 10:13)
And I have a plan

Don’t put yourself in a tempting situation
For fear of giving into sins gratification
Resist the devil, he will flee from you (James 4:7)
Because I have the final victory and will him subdue

The devil skillfully plays temptations song to sound like Mozart
But I am greater then he, I reign in your heart (1 John 4:4)
Listen to the words I impart
And do not let the devil outsmart

For the earth he will scour
Like a lion he seeks to devour (1 Peter 5:8)
Crush you, make you dour
Take heart child, I am with you in temptations darkest hour

Cloth yourself with my full armor (Eph 6:11)
So that you may stand against the deceiver
I have given you weapons to yourself gird
Draw out the sword, which is My inerrant Word (Eph 6:17)

This Word is powerful, sharp like a spear
For Satan trembles with fear
When he hears
One of My beloved speak the Word in his ear

So when temptation draws its line in the sand
Take up My sword and make a stand!
